The Bible was written to be read! This means that a faithful translation of the Bible must be both reliable and readable. It must be a text that can be trusted and one that is suitable for both public and private reading, and also for memorizing.
The Contemporary English New Testament was trans-lated with these goals in mind. Every attempt has been made to produce a text that is faithful to the meaning of the original and that can be read with ease and under-standing by readers of all ages. The translators of the King James Version had similar aims. According to the introduction that was published in the earliest editions of the KIV, the translators realized that a Hebrew or Greek word could not always be translated in the same way. They also knew that in order to make the meaning clear for their readers, they must often use a form that was very different from that of the original languages, but still true to the sacred text. That same translation principle has been followed in the CEV.
Like all reliable translations, the Contemporary English New Testament is made directly from the original Greek and is not an adaptation of any existing translation or translations. But not everyone who knows the biblical languages can do for today’s readers what the KJV translators hoped to do for their own generation. Almost any scholar can produce a literal rendering of the original languages. But this is only the first step in the translation process.
