Description

In this guide into the Book of Psalms the so-called “Prayer Book of the Bible” the reader is encouraged to read and ponder selected psalms, and to live with them personally.
The Psalms are classified here according to literary types which display a characteristic form and reflect a particular setting in wor-ship. Attention is given to “laments” (petitions in distress), “thanks-givings” (songs of thanks for God’s deliverance and other benefits), “hymns” (praises to God for his wisdom and power as Creator and his providential guidance of his people), and “spiritual songs” (affirmations of trust, expressions of delight in God’s Law), and “wisdom” (meditations upon the problems of existence). The author stresses the role of each of these psalm-types in Israel’s worship and in Christian worship today.
In addition, each chapter deals with an important theological ques-tion with which the church wrestles as it re-reads the Psalms in new situations it faces today (revelation in history, the enemies that threaten us, the power of death, the problem of suffering). This two-pronged approach provides insight into both the form and the content of the Psalms.
An epilogue offers practical suggestions about the performance of the Psalms in worship and new ways of interpreting them today. Other aids for the reader are appendices of Psalms according to type, a glossary of unusual terms used, and a selected bibliography.
