Description
In the Unique Hours is a collection of 99 senryu, which takes readers on a journey with the poet and his wife as they travel from East London to Port Elizabeth, en route to the vast majestic spaces of Theefontein in the Karoo. There they have to deal with agonising decisions about the final stages of his young wife’s terminal illness. Subsequently, they return to Port Elizabeth and her family where she spends her last days. Soon afterwards, the port has to go back to East London to pack up their home amid countless memories.
But most strikingly, In the Unique Hours is a haunting love story.
The poet’s fearless honesty, together with the masterful use of the senryu form to capture the immediacy, intensity, and gravity of those dire days, makes this a remarkable collection.
